Cakes for baby showers, graduation, fancy dress and themed parties... the list goes on and the market for designer cakes is huge!You ’ll note that we said ‘decorated dessert’ rather than ‘cake’; there is a good reason for that.Our country’s current focus on healthy eating and portion control has driven miniature cakes to the forefront of cake decorating ideas.Lately, the craze has centred around cupcakes â€" the American name for fairy cakes. You can work out of your home or open a shop (beware of overhead costs!).You may consider building a website and, as many other fabulous cake decorators do, post video tutorials online. You could also partner with a catering firm or two; that’s a great way for your work to gain exposure!Finally, you could host cake decorating classes â€" not quite as self-defeating a proposition as it sounds. Just because you show others how to tap into their artistic potential using buttercream frosting as a medium, doesn’t mean they won’t come to you for their future cake decoration needs.The key is to launching a successful business is getting your name out there; any way you can think of to do that is a step in the right direction. Tips for Reviewing the Midyear Report Card The school year has reached the halfway mark, which means it is report card time. Co-Founder and CEO Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center says that while some parents and children dread this time of year, report cards present an opportunity to make adjustments if needed and get children back on track. The midyear report card is a great chance for parents to assess their childrens strengths, weaknesses, progress and study skills, she says. Parents should open the lines of communication with their children and childrens teachers and guidance counselors and formulate a plan for the rest of the year to address any parent concerns. Huntington offers parents these tips when reviewing the report card: Its important to focus on progress. Too often, parents jump to the letter grades and dont spend time looking at much else. What you should look for is your childs progress toward mastery of grade-level standards. How is your child growing this school year? Pay attention to progress indicators and benchmarks. Effort matters most. Parents who are involved in the homework routine at home should have a good sense of how their children are doing on school work, but the report card will shed additional light. Look for marks and comments on the report card that highlight your childs effortand whether that effort is reflected in his or her grades, as it should be. Look for common warning signs. Low grades are one problem, but keep an eye out for other common red flags, including any indicators that your child has poor study skills, lacks focus, struggles to keep up or has difficulty with essential skills like organization and time management. If youve noticed a change in your childs demeanor and these kinds of issues are showing up on the report card, a discussion with the teacher is a good idea before the crisis period worsens. Content knowledge is just one measure. Yes, it is important to review your childs grades on content knowledge in the core subjects, but in todays education landscape, there are many other measures of students performance. Review the report card for comments and marks on your childs higher-level thinking, problem solving, comprehension and other similar abilities. Attitude is everything. Childrens attitudes about school are very tellingand a child who seems indifferent or angry about school is likely dealing with low confidence and feelings of hopelessness. Pay attention to any comments from the teacher (and probe further during the parent-teacher conference) on your childs motivation and overall attitude about learning and his or her grades. Report cards are a valuable tool for parents to gain a detailed understanding of how their child is performing in school. And no matter what the midyear report card looks like, Huntington encourages parents to keep in mind that no problem is insurmountable. If your childs midyear report card highlighted areas of concern, call Huntington, she says. Sexual harassment is technically defined as, “Harassment (typically of a woman) in a workplace, or other professional or social situation, involving the making of unwanted sexual advances or obscene remarks.” Basically, sexual harassment can range from disgusting and uncomfortable comments to disturbing actions (a form of sexual assault). If a person is making you feel uneasy or unsafe in the workplace because of a sexual remark or action, that’s when you know it’s sexual harassment. Since sexual harassment isn’t just one particular thing, it can be hard to identify when you’ve been harassed and when you should say something. The rule of thumb, in my opinion, is if you feel uncomfortable, you should say something about it. If you’ve been sexually harassed at work, there are a few steps that I recommend taking so that you receive justice after experiencing this horrific act. First and foremost I would talk to a friend/colleague within the company so that you don’t have to fight this battle alone. This person can either be a confidant, or they can help you when you choose to speak to someone higher-up about the incident. After talking to a trusted friend/colleague, you should talk to Human Resources. The people working in the Human Resources offices of any company are trained and know the protocol when it comes to sexual harassment in the workplace. You go an HR person and tell them your problem face-to-face so nothing is misconstrued and so they can see how serious the problem. In addition, you can talk to your HR representative about different ways of handling it. Once you go to HR they will be the communication between you and the sexual harasser. If HR doesn’t do anything about it, you talk to your boss. Companies are aware of the seriousness of sexual assault and they want to prevent any incidences within the workplace. If you set up a meeting with your boss, they will understand the severity of the situation and how the incident has caused you to question the company’s integrity and the people they choose to hire. If you are a woman and your boss is a man and you don’t feel comfortable talking to him about it, find a woman in a high-up position who can help you navigate the issue. Having another female voice can help you find some closure in the incident and they can help you navigate the process of reporting sexual harassment within the company. However, when it comes to sexual harassment, the most important thing is your health, both mentally and physically. If you are having trouble coping with the situation, it is important to ask for help. That help can be from a friend, a colleague, or even a therapist. There is no reason why you should have to deal with the emotional repercussions of something you didn’t ask for nor deserve. Healing from a case of sexual harassment goes so far beyond contacting your HR representative. You are the one who you should be worried about. Don’t worry about your position in the company or people finding out, you need to take care of yourself when it comes to something as serious as sexual harassment. I want all of my female readers to remember that sexual harassment isn’t okay and if you are a victim of sexual harassment, you did not ask for it, it’s not your fault, and you will make it through, I promise. It’s devastating that sexual harassment is such a terrible epidemic in the workplace, but that’s why it’s important to stand up for yourself if you find yourself in an uncomfortable sexual situation. You are not alone and you have people in your corner, never forget that.

He enrolled in Kumon when he was just 4-years-old, and successfully completed the entire Kumon Math Program in ten years. “Kumon has taught me how to think critically, a skill that truly determines intelligence,” said Justin. “Using critical thinking skills, I solve proofs in math, predict possible consequences in social science, and predict the outcomes of lab experiments in biology.” Justin is ranked #1 in his freshman class due to his outstanding GPA from excelling in his honors and advanced placement classes. He even put his math skills to the test competing in the Mathematical Association of America’s American Mathematics Competition when he was in eighth grade. The competition consists of a series of examinations that build problem-solving skills and knowledge for middle and high school students. Justin is proud to say he scored second out of the 9th and 10th graders on the “Franklin Mathletes” team. Outside of the classroom, Justin can be found on the soccer field playing for his competitive team, Sacramento United. With a love for animals, Justin finds time in his busy schedule to volunteer at his local pet sanctuary. He hopes to one day receive his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and become a neurosurgeon. “Being in charge of someone’s life is scary, but saving lives is what I want to do. Kumon has made me comfortable with asking for help when I need it, although I tend to dwell on a problem occasionally because I want to figure it out myself. Asking for help is needed sometimes to fully understand concepts both in and out of Kumon. It aids me in achieving perfect scores on school and Kumon tests, and having an in-depth understanding of the material. What do you enjoy most about Kumon? I enjoy that it has given me the ability to confidently work above my grade level. If you could sum up your Kumon experience in one word, what would it be? Rewarding. How has Kumon helped you outside of the classroom? Kumon has helped me develop critical thinking skills that are used in every day activities. Whichever field of study I decide to enter, Kumon will have supported me. For example, a scientist must work with precision through an experiment to gather and analyze data. Additionally, the repetition the program encompasses allows for the development of motor and concentration skills that can be vital in the workforce. I have been doing Kumon since a young age and have praised it for how much it has taught me and how it has propelled me above my peers. Being able to build my skills and continue to develop is important to me, and there seemed to be long-term opportunities there.
